FAQ

What is “natural” alphabetical order?

It sorts numbers by value inside text (e.g., Item 2 comes before Item 10), not purely by character code.

How does “By last name” work?

If a name contains a comma (e.g., “Doe, Jane”), the part before the comma is treated as the last name. Otherwise, the last word is used, ignoring suffixes like Jr., Sr., II, III.

What does “Treat accents as equal” do?

It removes diacritics for comparison (ÉlodieElodie), so accented and unaccented characters group together.

Can I sort by word count?

Yes—choose By word count to sort from few→many or many→few words on each line.

Can I download the result as a .txt file?

Yes—use the Download .txt button to save your output as a UTF-8 text file.

Is any data uploaded?

No—everything runs in your browser only.

Why alphabetizing your list matters

Organized lists are easier to scan, de-duplicate, and share. Whether you’re sorting names for a directory, tags for a CMS, or product attributes for an e-commerce import, a quick alphabetical pass prevents errors and saves time. Our tool focuses on clarity: 1-Click sorting, useful presets, and clean outputs ready for spreadsheets, email tools, and code editors.

What you can sort—beyond A→Z

  • A→Z / Z→A: Standard alphabetical order for words, phrases, and titles.
  • By length: Shortest to longest (or reverse) to surface concise items or flag outliers.
  • By last name: Perfect for contact lists—detects the last token in each line as the sorting key.
  • By word count: Rank lines by how many words they contain; helpful for content clean-up and QA.

Pair these modes with options like trim whitespace and case-insensitive comparisons to keep results consistent across mixed inputs.

Accuracy tips for consistent results

  1. Normalize characters first: If your list mixes accented and plain characters, run it through Remove Accents / Diacritics to avoid uneven ordering.
  2. Clean soft wraps: Use Remove Line Breaks / Fix Wrapped Text when lines were copied from PDFs or emails and broke mid-sentence.
  3. Dedupe after sorting: Sorting makes duplicates easier to spot—finish with Remove Duplicate Lines for a truly unique list.
  4. Preserve priority: If your current order encodes importance, export a backup before re-sorting so you can compare or roll back.

Example: A→Z vs. by last name

Input

Doe Jane
Miller Sam
Alvarez Nina
Lee Carter

A→Z sorts by the first word, giving “Alvarez Nina, Doe Jane, Lee Carter, Miller Sam.”

By last name uses the final token, producing “Carter Lee, Jane Doe, Nina Alvarez, Sam Miller.”

Private, fast, and export-ready

The sorter runs in your browser, so your list isn’t uploaded anywhere. Large inputs are handled efficiently, and you can instantly copy results or click Download .txt to save a clean file for your next workflow.
